How to reduce photo size to 20 KB on mobile

“Photo 20 kb” is one of the most searched phrases before every exam season. A phone camera photo is 2–5 MB. The form wants something like 20 KB. That is 100 to 250 times smaller — and most people do it from their phone, not a computer.

This guide shows how to get a photo or signature to 20 KB on mobile, without the face turning into a blurry mess. (If you have been searching “photo ka size kam kaise kare”, this is the answer.)

First: is it “under 20 KB” or “20 to 50 KB”?

This is the trap. Read your notice carefully:

  • IBPS / SBI signature: 10–20 KB. So 20 KB is the maximum.
  • IBPS / SBI photo: 20–50 KB. So 20 KB is the minimum — a 15 KB photo gets rejected as too small.
  • SSC signature: 10–20 KB.
  • Bihar Police photo and signature: 15–25 KB.

So “make it 20 KB” can mean very different things. Always check the latest official notice, then pick a target inside the range — not exactly on the edge.

SSC CGL, CHSL, MTSSignature≈ 472 × 157 px10–20 KB

The quick way (about 1 minute)

  1. Open Compress to 20 KB on your phone’s browser.
  2. Tap Take photo to use the camera, or Choose from gallery to pick a saved image.
  3. The target is already 20 KB, and the page tells you the file will be 18–20 KB. Compression starts by itself.
  4. SahiSize finds the highest quality that still fits under 20 KB, making the picture smaller in pixels if it needs to.
  5. Check the size shown (for example “18.7 KB”) and the ticks.
  6. Tap Download. The file is saved with your photo’s name plus -20kb.jpg, for example IMG_1234-20kb.jpg.

This page does not crop. If you need to cut away background or fit a fixed shape, use your exam page or Signature Resize, which both have a crop box.

Everything happens inside your browser. The photo is not uploaded to any server, so it works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

If your exam also checks pixels (like IBPS 200 × 230), use the exam page instead — for example IBPS PO — so both pixels and KB are set together.

Why most apps make it blurry

Most “compress” apps only lower JPG quality. A 3000 × 4000 px photo at very low quality might reach 20 KB, but it looks blocky and smeared.

The better method:

  1. Crop first. Throw away background you do not need (on your exam page or in the signature tool).
  2. Reduce pixels. A passport photo does not need 12 million pixels. 200 × 230 or 276 × 354 px is plenty.
  3. Then adjust quality. With fewer pixels, the photo hits 20 KB at a good quality.

SahiSize reduces pixels before quality automatically; the exam pages also crop first. More on why pixels and KB are different in KB vs pixels — simple explanation.

Tips for a sharp 20 KB file

  • Start from the original. Do not use a photo you received on WhatsApp — it is already compressed and loses more detail each time.
  • Plain background. A plain light wall compresses far better than a patterned curtain. Detail costs KB.
  • Good light. Dark, grainy photos have noise, and noise needs more KB. Daylight from a window is best.
  • Signatures compress easily. A clean black-on-white signature usually reaches 10–20 KB at high quality. Use Signature Resize, which also whitens the paper.
  • Stay just under the top. Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so a 19.9 KB file (20,378 bytes) can fail a 20 KB limit. SahiSize keeps a safety margin: a 20 KB target lands at about 18.5–19 KB, which passes either way.

The minimum-KB trap

If your target is a range like 20–50 KB, going too low is also an error. Signatures and plain photos often come out too small — 12 KB, 15 KB — even at full quality.

SahiSize’s exam pages and signature tool handle this: for range targets they raise quality, then slightly increases pixels within the allowed limits, and only if still short add invisible padding. You get a file inside the range without visible change.

For other targets, there are ready pages: 10 KB, 30 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB. For any custom number, use Compress Image.

On iPhone

iPhone photos are often saved as HEIC, which many portals do not accept. SahiSize reads HEIC and outputs a normal JPG, so you can compress and convert in one step. In Safari, the downloaded file goes to the Files app → Downloads.

On Android

Chrome saves downloads to the Downloads folder. When the exam portal asks you to choose a file, tap Browse or Files, then Downloads. Pick the file that ends in -20kb.jpg.

FAQ

How do I check the size of a photo on my phone?

On Android, open the photo in Files and tap the info (i) icon. On iPhone, open it in the Files app and long-press → Get Info. SahiSize also shows the KB before you download.

My photo is 20 KB on my phone, but the portal says “image size too large”. Why?

Your phone may round. The file might be 20.4 KB, or the portal may count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. Stay a little under: up to 19.5 KB (19,968 bytes) passes both ways of counting. SahiSize’s 20 KB page lands at 18–20 KB, usually about 19 KB.

Can I reduce photo size to 20 KB without losing quality?

Some loss is unavoidable at 20 KB, but if you crop first and reduce pixels to the size the exam wants, the photo still looks clear at normal viewing size.

Will compressing change my face or remove the background?

No. SahiSize only crops, resizes and compresses. It does not edit your face or change the background.

Is this the official IBPS or SSC tool?

No. SahiSize is independent and not linked to any exam body. Always check the latest official notice. If your photo was rejected, see why your photo got rejected.
