Upload errors and how to fix them
These are the messages the UPSC NDA & NA portal shows. Each one has a fix.
- Error:
Image size should be between 20 KB and 200 KB
- Fix: The NDA photo must be at least 20 KB. Tiny WhatsApp-forwarded photos fail; use the original camera photo and Auto-fit.
- Error:
Signature image dimensions should be between 350 and 500 pixels
- Fix: The three-signature image must be square-ish and 350–500 px on each side. SahiSize locks the crop to a square and outputs 500×500 when possible.
- Error:
Only one signature found
- Fix: UPSC wants the signature three times in one image. A single signature is a common reason for a defective application.
- Error:
Live photo does not match uploaded photo
- Fix: Take the live photo in similar light and with the same glasses/beard as the uploaded photo. If you changed your look, upload a new photo first.
About the UPSC NDA & NA upload rules
Many NDA applicants are still in Class 12 and are filling a UPSC form for the first time. The uploads are the same as for the Civil Services exam, but a few things catch first-timers out.
Three things first-timers get wrong
One signature instead of three. UPSC wants your signature three times, one below the other, in one image. The image is roughly square, 350–500 px on each side, 20–100 KB, in black ink.
A school ID-card photo. The uploaded photo must be recent, in colour, on a white background, with your face filling about 75% of the frame and both ears visible. A cropped group photo or an old ID-card picture will not match your live photo.
A different look on exam day. The form captures a live photo and compares it with the uploaded one. Avoid a new haircut or beard between the photo and the application.
Step by step
- Create your UPSC One-Time Registration if you have not already. The photo and photo ID go in there.
- Take the photo against a white wall. JPG, 20–200 KB; SahiSize keeps a 3.5×4.5 cm shape.
- On white paper, draw a 6×6 cm square and sign three times inside it. Photograph it and choose NDA here; the crop locks to a square.
- Prepare the photo ID you will name in the form. Guides describe it as a PDF of 20–200 KB; check the size and format on the form.
- Keep all files. The same OTR serves CDS and other UPSC exams later.
Under 18 and filling the form
- The three signatures must be yours, even if a parent helps with the rest of the form. Sign the way you will sign the attendance sheet at the exam.
- If you do not have a government photo ID of your own yet, sort that out before the form opens; the ID number you enter must belong to the card you upload and carry.
Timing
NDA is held twice a year. Notifications usually appear around December and May.
If the portal still rejects it
Most rejections are size or shape. A three-signature image under 350 px a side fails, so crop from the original photo, not a screenshot. A photo under 20 KB fails, so do not use a WhatsApp-forwarded copy.
UPSC NDA & NA size FAQ
What is the photo size for NDA?
JPG, 20–200 KB, recent colour photo on a white background with your face filling about 75% of the frame and both ears visible.
How do I do the three signatures for NDA?
Sign three times one below the other on plain white paper with black ink, then crop to a square and upload one image of 350–500 px per side, 20–100 KB. Our guide screen shows a sample.
Is the photo used for the OTR profile reused for every UPSC exam?
Yes, the One-Time Registration profile is shared across UPSC exams, but each application also captures a live photo that must match it. Update the photo in OTR if your look has changed.
Can my photo be older than six months?
Use a recent photo that matches how you look today. A mismatch with the live photo or at the exam centre causes trouble.
Which photo ID can I upload?
The ID you enter in the form (Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, PAN, driving licence etc.). Upload a clear scan in the size the form asks for (we have not confirmed it from the notice yet, so check the notice) and carry the same ID to the exam.
I am under 18. Does a parent need to sign?
The UPSC online form takes only your own signature, three times in one image. There is no parent-signature upload in the NDA application.
