About this tool and size
Where you need to compress a photo to 40 KB
DSSSB (Delhi) asks for both the left and the right thumb impression as images of up to 40 KB. The same target fits the RRB NTPC, ALP and Group D signature, which must be 30–49 KB, and the 20–50 KB photo and thumb rules on IBPS, SBI and RBI forms.
Quality when you convert a photo into a 40 KB JPG
Forty kilobytes gives a fingerprint or a passport photo plenty of room. Ridges, pores and hairlines stay distinct, and the JPG shows no blocking at normal zoom.
As a rough guide, a passport-style photo on a plain background stays clean at about 240×320 pixels in 40 KB. A busy background or a dim, noisy shot needs more kilobytes for the same size, and a signature on white paper needs far fewer.
What you will get
Whatever you add, the download is a baseline JPG (not progressive) between 36 and 40 KB. It stays under 40,000 bytes, so it passes whether the portal counts 1 KB as 1000 or 1024 bytes, and hidden camera and location data are removed.
Tip before you compress
Make the two DSSSB thumb impressions separately: crop each print to a square around the ridges, then compress. Do not put both thumbs in one image unless the form asks for it.
Exams with a 40 KB limit
These forms set a maximum of 40 KB for at least one document: DSSSB (Delhi) (left thumb impression, ≤ 40 KB); DSSSB (Delhi) (right thumb impression, ≤ 40 KB). Open your exam page for the full rules, including pixel sizes and background.
How to use it
- Add your image. Take a photo or pick one from your gallery. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC files all work.
- Check the target. 40 KB is already selected. Type a minimum if your form sets one, and decide whether the pixel size may change.
- Let it work. The tool tries the highest JPEG quality that stays under 40 KB and makes the picture smaller only when it has to.
- Download. When every line of the pass check has a tick, save the JPG and upload it to your form.
Questions
Do the left and right thumb need the same size?
For DSSSB both have the same 40 KB cap. Compress each image on this page and you get two files of 36–40 KB.
Can I photo resize to 40 KB and keep the exact pixels?
Yes, switch on Keep dimensions. The width and height stay the same and only the JPEG quality changes.
Is 40 KB too large for a 30–49 KB rule?
No. A file of 36–40 KB sits inside 30–49 KB with about nine kilobytes to spare under the cap.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs inside your browser on your own device. The page even works offline after your first visit.
